Poodle Dog aged 10 years
Hi ho, it’s Henry, and do I ever have a story to tell. I was living on the streets until I was rescued and taken to a city shelter. That was no place for a sweet pup like me, so the wonderful people at Animal Education and Rescue scooped me up. Now I’m enjoying the good life in a loving foster home.
I’ve already been to my first adoption event, and everyone fell in love with me. I can be picked up, and I’m the perfect size for a true lap‑dog lifestyle. I’m looking a little naked at the moment because the groomers had to shave my matted fur, but I feel so much better now.
I get along well with other dogs, and I walk nicely on a leash. It’s estimated that I’m about ten years old, but I still have plenty of spunk and personality. I may not be a spring chicken, but I’ve got lots of love and life left to give. If you’re a kind person with a cozy home, I just might be the nicest dog you’ll ever meet.

German Shepherd Dog/Border Collie Dog aged 21 weeks
Atlas carries a name rooted in strength, and this little shepherd/husky mix is already living up to it with his big, loving personality. At just three months old, he’s all affection, curiosity, and joyful energy.
Sweet Atlas loves to nap pressed against a human or stretched over a warm heating vent beneath his favorite houseplants. His tail is always wagging, and he approaches life with gentle enthusiasm. He adores people, gets along wonderfully with other dogs, and is especially attached to the kids in his foster home.

Olivia went straight from the transport truck into a foster home, where she quickly proved herself to be both dog friendly and kid approved. She weighs about forty pounds, which makes her just the perfect size for almost any home. We rescued her from a kill shelter, where she was a staff favorite, and it’s easy to see why.
We don’t know much about Olivia’s past, but we know everything we need to about who she is now. She’s young, friendly, playful, and absolutely adorable. We think she might be a shepherd mix, but who really knows — and does it even matter. Olivia is simply 100 percent awesome.

Dallas was caught by a Good Samaritan who knew he couldn’t survive outside and brought to us so we could find him a good home.
This is “Dallas” the Diamond Dove. He was caught outside in Gurnee. They are from Australia so he wouldn’t have made it through the winter and other dangers outside. They are about Lovebird size with a long tail and their lifespan is about 10 years. Diamond doves are gentle birds and do not bite.

Iris is an adorable bundle of puppy energy. We believe she is a Lab/shepherd mix, but only her parents know for sure. For being quite young, Iris is starting to learn about going potty outside. She has made friends with the other dogs in her foster home and enjoys playing with one particular friend out in the backyard, when she needs a nap, Iris prefers it to be in someone's lap. She will snuggle up and catch some zzzs until it's time to play, go outside or eat. And she has a great appetite! This soft, sweet puppy loves belly rubs, toys and Bene Bones. Since Iris is so young, she will benefit from some training. That should be pretty easy since she is smart. Iris will be a great addition to a loving family. Rugrat is an adorable rat terrier mix with a very sad past. He was severely abused by a disturbed teenage boy for numerous years. Eventually the mom of the teenager admitted the child in a hospital and asked us to take Rugrat, and she moved.
Because of Rugrat's past he has baggage. He is leery of strangers and introductions to new people must be slow. He currently lives with a single woman, her dog and visiting grandchildren whom Rugrat gets along well with.
Rugrat needs a quiet home and patient dog experienced people that know and recognize subtle signs of stress and behavior in dogs. The new family will need to be slow and steady with handling him in the beginning.
He is VERY loyal to his people. He LOVES walks and car rides. For the right big-hearted family, he will be a wonderful addition to their home. He weighs about ten pounds and is housebroken and crate trained.

Cavesties are very intelligent puppies. You can tell they listen to you by the tilting of their heads when you talk to them. They pick up on commands really well. The commands that I've been working on with them are:
"In you go" (used to get them to go inside of something; calling them indoors, bringing them into a room)
"Stay" (doesn't always work, but for 85% of the time if something doesn't catch their attention.)
"No Barking" (doesn't always work, but they're getting better at it)
"No Jumping" (Still working on it, but this is where they start walking [bouncing] on their hind legs, but not jumping on me). They follow me, bouncing alongside me.
When I talk to them, they will respond with a yodel as if they are joining in the conversation. It's not a bark, but a rolling of their tongue.
They are all very curious pups which is one of the West Highland and King Cavalier's traits; both of which are vermin hunters. So they tend to run around with their noses to the ground.

Runty, as the name implies, was the last puppy born in the group. He's the smallest of them. But don't let his size fool you. He is my "mountain goat". He'll climb over boxes in the house to get a better view and when outside, it'll be atop the pile of firewood that he'll climb to get the advantage (or a way to get away from Curly chasing him). Imagine being taken to a boarding facility and left there forever. That's what happened to sweet Sonya. Once the facility realized her owners weren't coming back, Sonja, who we estimate to be 8-10 years old, wound up at a high kill shelter. Despite her past, Sonya has never met a stranger. Everyone is her friend. Dogs, cats and kids. Sonya sleeps with her foster mom every night and enjoys finding a soft lap during the day. Sonya was clearly neglected by her previous owners. Frosty the puppy is a jolly, happy soul now that he has been rescued. He is a Great Pyrenees mix who came to us very underweight. He came to us from a high-kill shelter where he was on the euthanasia list. Frosty moved right into his foster home and made friends with the dogs in the house. He loves being outside with them. He is already gaining weight and confidence. Frosty will be an excellent addition to a loving home as well as a loyal friend. Dalia went from euthanasia list at a kill shelter to a loving foster home in just a few days. Dalia is simply amazing and she is so grateful to be alive. After arriving at AEAR, she took a field trip to the pet store for a bath and was well-behaved. She did a little shopping while there and joined her foster family for an outdoor meal. Dalia's foster home can be chaotic, with lots of people, dogs and cats coming and going. She doesn't care. She ignores the cats, does well with dogs and enjoys going on walks. Dalia is about 60 pounds of love. We think she is a shepherd mix, but your guess is as good as ours.

With her soulful brown eyes and gentle spirit, Mocha is the kind of German Shepherd who melts hearts just by wagging her tail. This sweet girl is equal parts loyal companion and cuddle bug, happiest when she's by your side. She loves everyone, especially kids. Mocha and her brother Max lost their home when their owner passed away. They were days from being euthanized when we rescued them. Now it's time for these sweet dogs to find their forever homes. He can be skittish around new people and is working hard to conquer that fair by going to summer festivals with his foster family. He is enjoying the weather by going for walks and running around the fenced-in backyard with the other dog in his foster home. Fen likes to sleep in the bed with his humans or on the couch. Stormie has a sweet personality and soft fur that is meant for brushing, not wearing. Chinchillas make much better pets than coats.

Dove is a doll in her foster home. One of her favorite things to do is snuggle up with her foster mom and watch television. She especially enjoys watching Blue Bloods reruns.
Dove is about 2-years old and a terrier mix. We rescued her from a crowded animal control and don't know anything about her past. We do know that she is sweet and sensitive. Dove will do best in an adult household that is quiet. Bonus if there is a television in the house. Cats and other dogs are welcome too!
If you are looking for a lovey-dovey dog please consider adopting Dove. It does take her a while to warm up to Strangers, so a busy household would not be a good fit for her.

Cisco was a puppy mill breeder dog whose entire life was about making money for the greedy breeders. No longer of value to them, he is now in a loving foster home with AEAR. Cisco wasn't used to human kindness and he certainly never learned what it is like to be part of a family. That all changed when he came to AEAR. He is starting to make progress and seeking out human companionship. He recently went looking for his foster family when they went into a different room. He is also starting to explore the house. Cisco is an adorable dog. We believe he can be a wonderful companion to the right adopters. Patience and understanding will be key to a successful adoption. We can only imagine what this little guy as been through. He likes other dogs and he is a really good boy.

Shih Tzu Dog aged 11 years
Sam was rescued from a high intake shelter after his owner surrendered him there because they said they could no longer care for him.
It just so happened we were going to the shelter to rescue a different dog and they showed us Sam. He had only been there less than a week and he was beside himself when we were with him pulling us towards every door he saw saying, “get me out of here!” So we did.
Sam is in a foster home and has been a complete gentleman. He’s been quiet, easy and maybe just a bit sad. We know he had been loved because he seemed to be missing his person.
Sam lives with two dogs without any issues. He enjoys walks and just hanging out. He may have some hearing loss. He would make a very sweet and easy addition to a loving home.

Bill is the best cat you have never met! This big boy is 16 pounds of pure love and affection. He settled into his foster home immediately and was sitting on his foster mom's lap in less than two hours. A few days later he was laying on her chest. He is the best snuggler and has a sweet purr. When you come home from work, Bill will ask you about your day and listen when you tell him about road construction, your grumpy manager or a deadline that you can't possibly make without his help. He is very empathetic. Bill is pretty laid-back. He likes to explore his foster home but he hasn't played much. Bill has been moved around and his last home was far from ideal. We want to make sure his next home is his forever home.

German Shepherd Dog Dog aged 9 years
Loki is a very spry senior dog with a heart of gold and a love of everyone. He acts far younger than his age.
He was given up by his owner because their daughter became severely allergic to him. He had been a very important member to his family since they bought him as a puppy. He was well taken care of and deeply loved. They were heartbroken to give him up. "He was our first child," his dad said when he relinquished him. Tears streamed down his face.
Loki can really fit into any loving home. He's housebroken and can be crated but doesn't need to be.

Naya is a young, small shepherd mix (under 30 pounds) that we rescued from a city shelter. Naya loves people so much. She prefers to be adopted by someone who works from home or isn't gone all day.
Naya's hobbies include chewing on her bone and relaxing with the family. She gets her exercise zooming around the backyard.
Looking for a sidekick? Naya is getting used to riding in the car. She is also great on a leash and crate trained. Like all young dogs, Naya needs some training. She is a wonderful little dog.

Saint Bernard St. Bernard Dog aged 7 years
Zelda is a pure-bred Saint Bernard who is happy, sweet and loving. She fit in with her foster family and their dogs immediately. Zelda was used as a breeder dog. Once she was of no use to the breeder, she was sold. The person who purchased Zelda wasn't equipped to handle her so she surrendered Zelda to us. If you love Saint Bernards as much as we do, you will absolutely adore Zelda.

If you love Cocker Spaniels as much as we do, then you will adore Yoshi, He was surrendered when his previous owner could no longer care for him. Yoshi is just under a year old. He is exploring his new foster home and getting used to all the exciting new scents and smells.
Yoshi already knows "sit" and "paw." His new owners will need to commit to housebreaking Yoshi and to providing him with the exercise he needs. He is proof that you don't need to go to a breeder for a pure-bred dog.

Nadia is a striking young, medium hair tortie who just wants to love and be loved. Nadia has the softest fur and a very floofy tail. She is a super snuggler and a great kisser. Nadia is as playful as a kitten and has a a bit of tortetude. IYKYN (if you know, you know). When not taking her many cat naps, Nadia zooms around her room and is very active. She enjoys being the center of attention and will tell her foster mom when she feels she is being neglected. Nadia loves being up high and would appreciate a cat tree or something tall where she can nap. She also likes looking out the window and singing with her bird friends. Nadia is a lot of fun and will be a great companion if you work from home. She is definitely a Velcro cat.
